A delicious love story with all the toppings, Lauren Morrill’s It’s Kind of a Cheesy Love Story is a contemporary YA rom-com about love, friendship, and pizza, perfect for fans of Becky Albertalli and Jenny Han.
After her mother gave birth to her in the bathroom of a local pizzeria, Beck has been given the dubious privilege of having minor fame, free pizza for life, and a guaranteed job when she turns sixteen—a job she unfortunately can’t afford to turn down.
Now she’s stuck with her geeky co-workers instead of taking Instagram-ready shots with her best friends (and her epic crush).
But maybe the pizza people aren’t all bad. Maybe that pizza delivery guy is kind of cute. And maybe there’s a way to make this Bathroom Baby thing work for her. Because when disaster strikes the beloved pizza place that’s started to feel like home, she’s going to need a miracle—one that might even mean bringing her two worlds together.
I don’t remember the last time I finished reading a YA novel so quickly! It’s Kind of a Cheesy Love Story (let’s stick to IKOACLS from now on, okay? 🤷♂️) had a gripping storyline and a fantastic cast of characters. I loved reading Beck’s story from the beginning to end. The book’s premise was what captured my attention in the first place, and the author didn’t disappoint. 4.5/5 ⭐
Reading IKOACLS made me laugh like a kid through and through. It’s refreshing, though-provoking and filled with humor – so the book’s basically everything that I want in young adult novels. I love books which center around friendships, and this book was just that. I know it has the word “love story” in the title, but the plot emphasized on Beck’s friendships more than the romance, in my opinion. Did I mind that though? NOT AT ALL. GIMME ALL THE BOOKS ABOUT SWEET FRIENDSHIPS!!😍🥰 The geeking/fangirling sessions between Beck and her co-workers in Hot N Crusty gave me life. I loved seeing her from new friendships, especially since it was revealed that she struggled making friends for most of her life. The book bought up many issues that teenagers face in high-school too. There were relatable moments all throughout the book, which I loved reading about with my whole heart. :’) 😭 And Tristan, OHHH Tristan. He was just the best addition to this book. I loved how carefree he was. I need Tristan’s confidence in my life, not gonna lie.
I really appreciated how IKOACLS explored the theme of differences between people with rich and poor backgrounds. Young people tend to have preconceived notions about others belonging from different kinds of households, and Beck’s character highlighted that aspect perfectly. I loved seeing her grow by learning different life lessons along the way. Kudos to the author, Lauren Morrill for writing such a thought-provoking, coming-of-age story! 🧡
If you’re looking for a book to uplift your spirits, you NEED to pick up It’s Kind of A Cheesy Love Story. Highly recommend. :’)
